History

The first movement to start a Catholic Church in Poth was made on March 5, 1910.  Karl Billimek & William Eckel took up a subscription for this purpose.  On April 23, of the same year, Stephen Schwertlich, Andrew Reinhard, and John Bednarz consulted with the Rt. Reverend Bishop J.A. Forrest concerning the buBSC Historyilding of a church.  Permission was granted to acquire land for the church and cemetery.  The group experienced some difficulty with the location until A.H Poth offered three acres of land for a church, and A. Raabe offered one acre of land for a cemetery.  The offer was accepted.

A. Raabe, Stephen Schwertlich and John Bednarz were then named to the building committee.  The committee traveled to San Antonio to confer with Rt. Reverend Bishop J.W. Shaw, who encouraged the project.  Plans were drawn for a wood frame church building.  The contract for construction was let to A.F. Zunker of New Branfels.  Construction began on April 20, 1911 and was completed by the middle of june of the same year, having a total cost of $2492.

Dedication Ceremonies were held on January 12, 1912 with Rt. Reverend Bistion J.W. Shaw presiding.  Reverend John from the diocese f Sioux City, Iowa was temporarily placed in charge of the congregation.  On May 12, 1912, Reverend J. Heinglmier, pastor of Hobson, was given the Poth Parish as a mission.

The Stations of the Cross, Donated by St. Mary’s congregation of Wiley, Texas were blessed and erected on Nov. 4, 1912.  On the same day, a new bell was blessed and given the name, John the Baptist.  In 1923, Wings were added to the original church at a cost of $560.

Two years later, at the cost of $6,095, a Catholic school was built in 1925.  It was a ten-room frame building with classrooms and living quarters for nuns.  The school was staffed by felician Sisters from Illinois.  The school burned on September 5, 1942, just days before school was to begin.  The pastor at this time was Reverend James Marsollier.

In 1937, the old rectory was sold for $520 and a new one was built for $6612.19.  The grotto, which was built in 1933, was disassembled to make room for the resent rectory, which was built in 1966.

Fundraising for a new church began in 1944 under the leadership of Father Leopold Bujnowki.  An annual picnic was a big event in the parish for many years.  Ground breaking for the new church took place October 19, 1958, and work began the next day.  Bishop Leven dedicated the church on May 24, 1959.  The pastor at this time was Father Armand Florizone.

The parish acquired the CCD building near the public school in 1957.  Meanwhile, the parish Hall was built in 1980.
